September 2008 Studio of the Month
Simply Canvas is proud to announce the September 2008 Studio of the Month Award Winner: Michael Davis of Photoworks, located in Lebanon, Ohio. Michael Davis was chosen as a result of his passion for traveling the world and capturing the story and culture behind every photographic he takes.
Photoworks is a small studio located on the first floor of Michael's home. Michael has actively been involved in the form of art and darkroom work for 30+ years. His work contains a wide range of subject matter including images from Amish Country, Europe (specifically Paris, France), unusual trees and colored flowers, local scenes and funk, electric photos that seem to defy categorization.
One marketing tool Michaels uses in selling his images are Gallery-Wrapped Canvas Prints compliments of Simply Canvas. After receiving no follow-up from another canvas lab and learning that we were located in Ohio, he decided to try us out. "One of things that persuaded me to try you is that you were fairly local," Michael said. He went on to explain that it was his first phone call with Drew in the printing department that he knew a relationship was forming. "He's on top of his game. This guy knows what's doing," he stated. Michael is glad to have started selling his images on canvas because "the results have been amazing!" He continued to say, "I can tell you, when people see the canvases outside the booth it drives them in like a magnet. People just marvel and say WOW! It really gets that kind of response."
Michael has found inspiration in a lot of places, not just in his travels. The biggest place was growing up during the time that he did. "My generation grew up into the whole photo journalism thing. There were Life and Look magazines and the Saturday Evening Post, which were magazines real big on photography," Michaels said. He continued by saying that his generation embraced photography and is amazed at how far the art has come. Michael embraces photography so much that all his images tell a story. He believes that a customer not only buys something for their walls but they're also buying a story behind the image. "I talk to all my customers at these shows that are hovering around a particular image. I say hi, there's an interesting story behind the image," Michael said.
Storytelling at Art Shows play a small role in Michael's marketing of Photoworks and the images he has taken. According to him, it brings the people into the whole concept of the photograph.
